✝️ What Does Jesus Expect from the Church?
According to the Apostles
When folks talk about what a church ought to be, you’ll get all kinds of answers. Some say it needs better coffee. Others say it needs louder music or softer pews. But if we want to get serious, we need to ask a better question:
👉 What does Jesus expect the church to be?
And for that, we turn to the apostles—the ones who walked with Him, learned from Him, and were sent out by Him to build the early Church. Let’s take a look at what the apostles tell us Jesus had in mind.
📖 1. A Church Devoted to the Truth
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
— Acts 2:42
🖼️ Illustration: Picture a small group of early Christians gathered in a simple home, Bibles open (well, scrolls), praying and studying together. They’re hungry—not for food, but for the Word.
The first Christians were devoted to teaching. Not opinions. Not politics. Not fluff. They dug deep into the gospel—the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. And they didn’t grow tired of it.
Today? Jesus still expects His church to be centered on the truth, not trends. A church that sticks to Scripture is a church that pleases the Lord.
🤝 2. A Fellowship of Deep, Honest Love
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
— John 13:35
🖼️ Illustration: Think of a potluck out in the country. Folks gathering not just for food, but for friendship, comfort, and care. That’s what the early church felt like.
The apostles, especially John and Peter, emphasized love—not just any love, but the kind that forgives, sacrifices, and sticks through the storms. That’s what sets the Church apart from any club or gathering.
Jesus expects His people to treat each other like family—not perfect, but deeply committed to one another.
🎵 3. A Worshiping, Spirit-Filled Body
“Be filled with the Spirit… singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.”
— Ephesians 5:18-19
🖼️ Illustration: An old country church with a cracked hymnbook in every hand. No flashy lights, but tears in the eyes and joy in the voices.
Whether it’s a guitar or a pipe organ, true worship is about the heart, not the volume. The apostles taught that real worship comes from the Spirit, not a setlist. Jesus expects His church to worship in truth and Spirit, not performance or ritual.
🌍 4. A Witness to the World
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…”
— Acts 1:8
🖼️ Illustration: Imagine a campfire in the dark woods. One flame lights another, and soon the darkness is pierced by a growing circle of light. That’s the church, on mission.
The church doesn’t exist just for Sunday mornings. Jesus said to go—into homes, cities, nations—and make disciples. If we aren’t reaching out, we’re not following Jesus’ final instructions.
Evangelism isn’t optional. It’s the heartbeat of a faithful church.
🤲 5. A Place Where Everyone Has a Role
“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:7
🖼️ Illustration: A team of farmers working together—one drives the tractor, one checks irrigation, another fixes the fence. Different roles, one harvest.
The apostles made it clear: every believer has a gift, and Jesus expects us to use it. Whether you teach, clean, cook, or encourage, your role matters.
A healthy church isn’t a show. It’s a team effort, where everyone gets in the game.
🧱 6. A Church Built on Christ
“…built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.”
— Ephesians 2:20
🖼️ Illustration: A stone foundation with one large rock at the corner—everything else is lined up from it.
Trendy teachings and feel-good fluff won’t hold when the storms hit. Jesus is the cornerstone, and the apostles were clear: no other foundation will do.
If Christ isn’t the center, we’re building in vain.
🛡️ 7. A Pillar of Truth in a World of Lies
“…the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.”
— 1 Timothy 3:15
🖼️ Illustration: A lighthouse standing tall during a storm, offering light to every ship lost at sea.
The church isn’t called to blend in or keep quiet. Paul and the apostles warned about false teachers, and truth was always worth defending.
Jesus expects His Church to proclaim the truth clearly and live it boldly, even when the world pushes back.
🌱 8. A Church That Grows in Grace
“…to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ…”
— Ephesians 4:12
🖼️ Illustration: Rows of crops in good soil, growing strong under the sun—not just surviving but thriving.
The apostles didn’t just call people to faith—they called them to grow up in faith. Jesus expects us to move from milk to meat, from shallow belief to deep discipleship.
A faithful church is a learning church, where the people are always growing in knowledge, grace, and love.
🧭 Final Thoughts: What Kind of Church Are We Becoming?
The apostles didn’t leave us guessing. They gave us a clear blueprint for what Jesus wants His church to be:
- Bible-centered
- Spirit-led
- Loving
- Outreaching
- Gift-using
- Christ-built
- Truth-standing
- Always-growing
And here’s the good news: Jesus hasn’t given up on the Church. He’s still shaping her, strengthening her, and using her to reach the world.
Let’s be that kind of church—faithful, humble, full of grace and truth.
