🌍 Why Is There Evil and Suffering?
A Christian Perspective on One of Life’s Toughest Questions
If there’s one question that haunts both skeptics and saints alike, it’s this:
“If God is good, why is there so much evil and suffering in the world?”
We ask it in hospital rooms, at gravesides, in the wake of disasters, and during long, sleepless nights. The pain is real. The confusion is real. But the Christian faith doesn’t ignore these questions—it confronts them with both honesty and hope.
Let’s walk through this together, leaning on Scripture, the wisdom of faithful believers, and the compassionate heart of our Savior.
🌱 1. Evil Was Not Part of God’s Original Design
The Bible opens with a beautiful truth:
“God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.” — Genesis 1:31
God’s creation was not designed to include pain or death. Everything was in harmony—humanity enjoyed perfect fellowship with God and with each other.
But in Genesis 3, we see the first cracks. Adam and Eve chose to rebel against God’s command, and sin entered the world. That one act fractured everything.
“Just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, in this way death spread to all people, because all sinned.” — Romans 5:12
Sin didn’t just stain human hearts—it sent ripples of pain through all creation.

Imagine a mirror crafted to reflect the brilliance of the sun. When it’s shattered, the light still reflects—but it’s distorted and dangerous. That’s what sin did to creation. The world still bears signs of God’s goodness, but it’s broken.
🕊 2. Why Free Will Matters in the Story
You might wonder, Why would God allow this to happen in the first place?
The answer lies in love. Real love requires freedom.
“If a thing is free to be good, it is also free to be bad… Free will… is the only thing that makes possible any love or goodness or joy worth having.”
— C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
God didn’t want puppets—He wanted people who could truly love Him. But that freedom came with risk. And we chose sin.
God didn’t cause evil—but He permitted the choice that made love possible.
🌍 3. A World Groaning for Redemption
The brokenness of this world isn’t limited to human behavior. Creation itself suffers.
“We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” — Romans 8:22
Natural disasters, disease, and decay—all are signs that something has gone terribly wrong. This world is not as it should be. But even in its groaning, creation is longing for restoration.
🔥 4. God Uses Suffering for His Good Purposes
This is hard to grasp, but absolutely essential: God can use even the worst suffering for good.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” — Romans 8:28
That doesn’t mean everything is good. But nothing is wasted in God’s hands.

Sold into slavery, falsely accused, imprisoned for years—Joseph could have been bitter. But later he tells his brothers:
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…” — Genesis 50:20
God used Joseph’s suffering to save countless lives. He still does that today.
✝️ 5. Jesus Stepped Into Our Suffering
Here’s what makes Christianity so unique: God didn’t stay distant—He came close.
“He was despised and rejected… a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.” — Isaiah 53:3
Jesus wept, bled, was betrayed, beaten, and crucified. On the cross, He cried:
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” — Matthew 27:46
Jesus knows suffering. And because of that, He walks with us through ours.
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses…” — Hebrews 4:15
🕊 6. Suffering Isn’t the End of the Story
If you’ve read only the painful parts of the Bible, don’t stop there. Turn the page. There’s a final chapter—and it’s full of hope.
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain…” — Revelation 21:4
Evil and suffering won’t last forever. Jesus came not only to bear our pain, but to conquer death and make all things new.
“Behold, I am making all things new.” — Revelation 21:5

You’ve probably read a book where the middle is messy, painful, and confusing—but the ending redeems everything. That’s the gospel story. We’re living in the middle, but the ending has already been written.
🤝 7. Our Calling: Be the Hands of Jesus in a Hurting World
While we wait for that glorious day, God calls us to action.
“Praise be to… the God of all comfort… so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” — 2 Corinthians 1:3–4
We don’t have to understand all the reasons for suffering to make a difference. We can show up, listen, feed, clothe, pray, and love.

A paramedic once said, “We don’t run away from pain—we run toward it.” That’s what Christians are called to do. Because Jesus ran into our suffering first.
✨ Final Thoughts: Hope in the Midst of Pain
Why is there evil and suffering?
- Because we live in a world marred by sin.
- Because God gave us freedom, and we used it to rebel.
- But also, because God is working behind the scenes—redeeming, restoring, healing.
And He didn’t leave us alone. Jesus came. He suffered. He conquered death.
So even when we don’t understand why, we know Who we can trust.
Hold on to this:
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
